Dormition Fast

The fast in preparation for the Dormition of the Mother of God begins Friday, August 1/14. During this time, like a little Lent leading to a "Summer Pascha", we increase our struggles in fasting, prayer and almsgiving, and we have the blessing and spiritual aid of extra services in the Church.

First, we will serve the Paraklesis, or Supplicatory Canon to the Mother of God every other weekday evening throughout the fast (excluding those evenings on which there are already services for one of the Great Feasts that fall during August). See the calendar for specific dates and times.

Second, we have the Great Feast of the Transfiguration of our Lord Jesus Christ. This feast falls on Wednesday, August 6/19. The Vigil will be served the evening before, beginning at 6:00 pm. The Hours and Liturgy will begin the morning of the Feast at 8:00 am. Then, we will reconvene at the Church at 6:00 on the evening of the Feast for our festal meal together (please remember, when preparing food for the dinner, that we will still be keeping the fast at this time, though we are allowed fish, wine and oil on this day).

Third, we have the Great Feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos. This feast falls on Firday, August 15/28. The Vigil will be served the evening before, beginning at 6:00 pm and will include the service with the Winding Sheet of the Theotokos (Epitaphios or Plaschinitsa). The Hours and Liturgy will begin the morning of the Feast at 8:00 am. Then, we will reconvene at the Church at 6:00 on the evening of the Feast for our festal meal together (please remember, in preparing food for the feast, that, while it is a Great Feast, we still observe the Friday fast, though the fast is lessened to allow for fish, wine and oil on this day).
